Operation Clean Up!!!

Hello everyone

This is my first post so thought I'd document the progress of cleaning up and drying out my R53. I purchased the car on the 28th November 2014 from a mechanics, the car had no service history but due to the fact it was owned by a mechanic this didn't really worry me! The car is a 2003 and has done 73,000 Miles, the power steering has been replaced and the clutch, the supercharger has been serviced and so has the car! Full years mot and all new tyres. Car has the Chilli pack and Sat Nav, Although I will probably need to replace the Sat Nav, its the DVD one so if anyone has one for sale please let me know.

Anyway the seller had disconnected the battery as he didn't want it to drain... Not a good idea!

The windows drop when the battery is disconnected and the rain flooded in!

The guy sold the car as spares and repairs as he thought there was a major electronics issue and the BC1 was wrecked.

In my past life I was an electronic engineer so thought 'I could fix that'.

I bought the car for a song. On the Saturday I set about fixing the car... Mechanically the car is perfect and I did manage drive it home even though the lights were pretty intermittent!

Link below will show just how bad it was!

Won't allow me to add a link :/ but if you type 'R53 water ingress' in youtube you will see just how bad the water in the car was!

Before I removed the carpet...

Once the carpet was removed from the car I used the carpet machine to suck as much water out as possible.

After removing the carpet...
Attachment 180865

I took the carpet inside the house and stuck it in the spare room to properly dry it out, I also took the seats as I wanted to carpet clean the whole lot just to spruce them up!

And the finished results...

Attachment 180881

I also reconditioned the leather seats with conditioner etc! They've come up great!

Now as for the electrics I took the BC1 out and completely dried it out and tested the PCB which checked out fine I also checked the wiring and completely dried the loom out!

Everything now works as it should and there is no fault whatsoever! Very pleased and LUCKY! :)

I will pop some more pics up once I have fitted the carpet and seats which I will do this weekend.

I'm going to be water proofing the loom and BC1 before I refit the carpet, I'll be taking some pics of that also.

Hope I've not bored you all.

Thanks

Nick :D

First Gen Mini Coop S

I'm guessing that all mini's 2002-2006 are considered first generation? My 2005 Mini Cooper S Convertible is new to me and after a couple of months have discovered a few little idiosyncrasies.
1) Only got one key fab and it didn't work. I was told that after driving for a while the battery would recharge. Never heard of that but low and behold....Took the laptop out to the front seat and tried reprogramming the Fab. Apparently only works on second generation models? I need to replace the battery in this Fab?
2) My Oil pressure light comes on at lower RPM's after driving for a while. Oil pressure drops to zero as well. All oil temp and engine temp remain normal as well as oil levels are good. Went for an oil change and was told that there is a spring in the oil filter housing that gets stuck and causes this problem. I have read a few threads on this site that lean more towards a faulty wire and heat shield. Also a mesh basket around the oil filter might be the problem. Anything definitive?
3) I love my Mini. Bought it at the end of Sept so just a tease with the convertible top. Looking forward to the spring.
Any help or suggestions with these annoyances would be greatly welcome.
Happy motoring!

VW Convert to Mini

Hi everyone,

My name is Steve, I'm from north of Toronto in Canada. I recently purchased a 2005 Mini Cooper in pepper white with black roof. I've had the car now 2 months and have loved every moment with it so far.

I'm a recovering VW addict. I've had a Mk1 Scirocco, Rabbit GTI, and a Jetta GLI (16V swap), three Mk2 GTI's, two with VR6 swaps, a Mk2 Jetta GTX 16V, a Corrado VR6, a Mk3 Golf, and two Mk4 1.8T's (a Jetta and a Golf). I've also had a Fox station wagon. Driving nirvana for me was my Mk1 GTI (it had a shaved head, big cam, a close ratio gear box, and a ton of suspension work)... the Mk2's came close but after the Mk2's nothing touched the driving experience. Went into the Ford camp for awhile (Contour SVT, Focus SVT, ZX2) but nothing caused the fizzy sensation that the Mk1 did.

Ever since owning my Mk1's and Mk2's I've been looking for something with similar driving dynamics and I think I've finally found it in the Mini. Light, tight, good balance of power. Loving it.

My other car is a 1988 Ford Mustang LX 5L no options car that satisfies my "go-fast-in-a-straight-line" urges.

I've added a JCW grille kit to the car and will be adding the JCW sound kit in the spring as well as some suspension bits and a decent looking set of wheels and tires and enjoying.

Looking forward to picking the brain of this community!

This don't look right to me.

Last night I picked up my 2011 Mini Cooper Clubman. Tonight i noticed something very odd and possibly wrong. A friend told me I only had one reverse light (it just passed the safety 2 days ago). On closer inspection i saw that only the right side tail light had a clear lens for a back up light. The left lens is all red. Is this a quirky thing with the Mini or should I talk with the dealer?

2nd Hand Countryman, Which Model??

Hi

I previously owned a Cooper Convertible but decided it was time for a change so have sold it and I'm looking to buy a Countryman. I have around £12k to spend but could go up to £13k at a push, so obviously it will be second hand.

The problem is I'm compleltey unsure what model to go for other than I want it to be at least a Cooper. The good fuel economy on the diesel is quite attractive but I've also seen a Cooper S, which just falls within my price range and is stunning to look at although I realise this is probably the complete opposite of the diesel in terms of MPG.

I would appreciate any views from owners of the different versions.

Thanks in advance!

Please allow me to introduce myself.....

4 x R112 swop for JCW Burnished R113 ??

I'm getting a new JCW and it comes with JCW Burnished R113 - 18 x 7 wheels.

Does anyone know if anyone would do a direct swop for some R112's? Is that something that would be a fair direct swop? Or would I need to put more cash in / can I get the swop PLUS some cash?

Which is more desirable?

Thanks

Heater problem

Hi all, the heater on my daughters 07 mcs only blows warm (barely) air I have bled the coolant under pressure through the bleeder on the thermostat housing and both pipes on the heater matrix are hot .
When the heat controller is operated hot to cold it works fine and you can hear the valve operating, when returned to the hot position the valve sounds but heater temperature is only just warm, I suspect a blocked heater matrix but am open to any other ideas you may have.

Display fault on automatic air conditioning display

$

Hi
The circular display in the middle of my automatic air conditioning controls has developed a fault. A small feathery line has appeared above the bars that show the fan level. It started off a few days ago as just a few pixels but the line is growing each day and is now about a cm long. It is jagged and feathery in shape. The display has not been damaged physically by me.
The weather has turned cold in the last week but I cannot imagine that would have caused the display to crack surely?

My mini in a cooper Pimlico bought in August 2011. I live in th UK. I did buy the TLC cover

Any ideas what this might be and what I should do?

turbo problem?

Hi, My wife (and I) have a 2009 Mini Clubman Cooper D and it's a great fun little car to drive (Honda Civic 2.2 iCTDi sport for me).

This morning it's really unresponsive above 2nd gear. I can hear the turbo whistling in 2nd (noisier than normal I think) but when I shift into third there's a little noise (kinda like a bag of crisps popping), and then really slow acceleration (painfully slow, but it's there) in all gears above 3rd. As soon as I go back to 1st and 2nd it repeats (whistle, pop, no acceleration).

I'm assuming turbo, but I'm not great with cars.

Its got 90k on the clock and full service history, but we've only had it 3-4 months

Thanks in advance for any advice

My 2008 r56 MCS RHD with Bi-xenon has factory fit additional headlamps / spot lights (not the after market kit) which have stopped working.

Want to check the fuse and relay but can't find where they're located.
I've searched the forum and can't find anything and apologies if this is in the wrong place - but I'm new to this forum lark.....all help appreciated

Hello all - currently on my 3rd MCS - a 2008 R56, which I've had for about 3 yrs now. Really love it but it's starting to give me a bit of grief and trying to avoid spending lots of cash at the dealers! Also got an old Lotus, so used to a bit of spannering.

Reason for finally signing up is that the factory fitted spot lights have packed up and I can't find the fuse to check it - have posted on that elsewhere but if anybody has got any ideas.........

2009 Mini Cooper S

Hi Folks,

Recent purchase of a Mini Cooper S has led me to join this site as I am looking to start carrying out some upgrades to make it a bit more suitable for track days in the new year.

Not competing but with the JCW and GP out there feel its time to push mine up into the ranks of holding its own against the elise and MR2 owners on the track whilst maintaining its daily driveability.

Anyway thats a bit about me, laters.

Guys and Gals,

I do know how this works but I cant see a recent post that covers this so if I am duplicating an existing topic in circulation I do apologize.

Anyway I will cut to it,I have a 2009 mini cooper S that in the new year I want to track. Its not competitive but I dont want to be lagging too far behind.....what mods would you guys recommend to get a little more juice out the S

I was thinking exhaust, intake and remap initially.

My old mini does anyone here have it?

Been a few years since I was on here. Me and my wife where talking about cars and I said the JCW was one of my favourites. Did a status check on the tax and its off the road with no MOT!!!???? Whats happened to it?? A lot of love and money went in to that car. Is the latest owner on here or anyone know who has it? Just wondering why she is off the road for the last few months? Number started MM03 *** and it was in black. I got rid of it in 2010 and brought a R32 as I needed a bigger car

New member introduction & discussion of problem

Hello,
Just joined. I purchased my daughter a 2006 mini 3 years ago. She named her Stella. Stella has 115K on her now. Never had a problem until yesterday. My daughter is in college and called to tell us that Stella would turn over but would not start. She had not driven it for 3 days and the drivers side floorboard has standing water at least 2 inches deep (we had alot of rain). With the ignition off, all the dash lights and tail lights are staying on. During cranking, the windows went down and will not go back up. The battery is now dead. I went to the rescue with a new battery (specific for a mini) today. I installed the battery got the windows to roll up but have the same problem with the dash board lights and tail lights staying on with the key off. I checked the ignition coil and no spark is going to the plug wires. Any ideas on what has caused this?
