Knob!

2013 Cooper SD

Gearshift knob top decorative cover, chrome thing with 1-6 & R came off in my wife’s hand, all four retaining clips have broken. Can anyone recommend a source for just a replacement top cover thingy? Local stealer quoted around £80 for a complete top assembly which seems utterly ridiculous when it’s just the decorative top bit which looks to be simply removable anyway.

Suggestions?

Currently seeing if some double sided tape is going to work in the longer term.
Does the top light up? I can’t remember and now can’t see if it does or not as the tape will be blocking it!

R53 & R50 coils

Hi all!

After some complaints from younger passengers I'm looking to soften the ride on my R53 it's a great punchy ride but local roads aren't in the best condition.
Would standard R50 coils fit on an R56 (56 plate)?

These still look like OEM which are bound to be down after 12 years or would simply new R53 springs bring some life back into the ride?
I've also put new tyres on each corner which have helped but not the the same extent that I'm looking for.

I'm open to suggestion!

Thanks

Should I have an updated remap after more mods?

When I bought my Cooper S R53 it had already had GTT CAI and Catback exhaust and after several months of ownership I went and had it remapped with a view of no more mods.

Then over the next half a year or so my mods syndrome got the better of me and I upgraded to a young box with LSD and new clutch and parts, 15% pulley, lightweight zero harmonic balancer, modded bypass valve, upgraded to Teflon S.C.
Now, thinking in hindsight that I should have waited till after all those mods before having the remap done.

Do you guys think I should have my existing remap updated or not to bother? The remap dude still wants a couple of hundreds to do the job and I don't want to spend a few hundred quids to see a tiny blip in any more gains.
Or do I save the dosh and upgrade my Intercooler instead?

For your information, I'm not looking to do any injector or cams upgrades.

Thank you.

Dash lights....help....

Hi all,
ok.....when I switch on my indicators and then cancel them it still shows up that there still on even though they are switched off....

Everything outside the car (indicators) work fine, left and right no problem.
if I put on say the left indicator the left indicator outside the car works fine then when I cancel the indicator the outside stops as it should but inside (green light, arrow) stays on. this sequence happens on both sides...

Really doing my head in....Anyone got any ideas as to what is causing this problem.
Thanks,
Andy.

Hello from Canada. I have a 2008 Sidewalk Cooper S convertible, manual. Her name is Wanda. I'm joining because now that she is a senior citizen (210,000km and counting), I'm in need of experienced owners like you chaps. Looking forward to meeting all of you.

Correction (already!)....Wanda is 10 years old! Eeek!

High Mileage Mini

Hello, my R52 Cooper S Convertible is now post 210,000km. Somewhere around 124,000 miles. I've been pretty good with regards maintenance, and ultimately want to keep the car "forever".....or at least to 300,000km. (Sidebar: I'm tired of throwing things away that just need a bit of repair). She sleeps in the garage in the winter, so that helps from an overall perspective with salt/rust etc. I haven't seen a great deal of rust but keep looking all the time...big fear of rust!

I'm looking for some advice from any other high-mileage-owners. What are some of the things that you have run in to - could you take a look at the list below and let me know if I"m missing anything please? I know this will cost $$$ but that's ok, given that I want to keep the car running just as well as she is now.

Work done between 100,000km – 150,000km
• Power steering reservoir and cooling fan
• Thermostat
• Serpentine Belt
• Air Filter assembly
• Changed Coolant and transmission fluid
• Water Pump
• Serviced super charger
• Replaced water pump and radiator hose
• New Battery
• New clutch and slave assembly, new (smaller) overdrive pulley
• Front shocks

Work done between 150,000km and 200,000km
• Thermostat
• Gear box selector cables
• Power steering cooling fan
• Alternator
• Right front engine mount and Transmission mount assembly
• Left front ABS sensor
• New battery
• Replaced handbrake cables

Work to be done now at 215,000km
• Serpentine belt and tensioners
• Water pump
• Thermostat
• Service super charger
• Power steering fluid flush, replace cooling fan
• Replace vacuum hoses as required (currently have P1498 fault code)
• Engine mounts and/or transmission mounts (car is vibrating when stopped at red light)
• Replace rear shocks, consider replacing front (already done but other ones might help old age) and consider replacing front bushings, ball joints and strut bearings
• Adjust handbrake (too “loose”, too high)
• Check CV joint boots
• Service air conditioner
• Replace spark plugs
• Replace power steering pump
• Replace oil pump
• Replace timing chain (with guides etc)

Hi folks...when I bought my car the wing mirrors didn’t adjust using the switch.

I’ve boight a working switch and swapped it and nothing.

Took mirrors off and cables are connected on both sides.

I’ve checked fuse number 3 which is the clock/wing mirror could anybody verify it’s the right fuse please and shed some light onto why both mirrors don’t work?
Am I missing something?
Cheers ste

Hi
Does anyone know where I can get a replacement for the egr cooler to egr valve 'O' ring. Have tried my local dealer and they tell me I need to buy the £296 cooler, this seems a lot for an 'o' ring. Tried googling and eBay but no luck.

Changing Car

So I've had my Mini for about a year now - it's a standard Mini One 1.6l 98bhp model. It is really nice to drive and I've enjoyed doing audio upgrades and fitting an amplifier etc.

I'm really into cars and feel like I would like to upgrade sometime next year (For more power and different experience), however I am going to university and not getting an apprenticeship (Where I would be working full time) so I will be relying on my part time work for my income.

I have been driving since January when I passed my test, and when my insurance renewal comes up I (touch wood) will have 1 year no claims, which will hopefully make a decent difference.

My question is this : Is it worth changing my car or should I keep it - It's just that I really love the Cooper s models and it would be great to have something I can really play with and modify that I wouldn't feel a bit silly displaying at a show, or changing completely to something like a Mk7 ST. Either way, what are your opinions on changing your first car to something more powerful after about 1-2 years, and how long did you keep your first car for?

No Compression cylinder 1

Hi No compression in cylinder one, added spoonful of oil in to cylinder 1 still no compression, no blue smoke from exhaust pipe when fired up, hardly runs though! cylinders two, three and four are reading approx 145, engine is the N12 1.4cc with approx 90k on the clock, removed valve cover found top chain guide broken no sign of plastic guide, valves appear ok just looking from top not sure about seats etc. Do you think its just the timing out causing the no compression or deeper trouble with valves , seats , guides etc.

Kevin

R56 N12 Timing Chain

$

Hello to all... I've been a lurker for a while, but eventually signed up as a member to get some information from the experienced owners on here..

The wife's car is an R56 2007 cooper (non s), it started running roughly and idling erratically until eventually the EML light came, at this point I purchased an ODB reader and had discovered I had P0011 P0012 codes and another for the Map thermostat.

Never done any mechanical work before so took my time to watch as many vids on YT and read up on how to do the repair.

First thing I did after replacing the thermostat housing was replace the tensioner, and vanos solenoids. This worked for about 10 minutes, the EML went out and codes cleared briefly. All good for 5 minutes then it began sounding much worse. and codes came back, so looks like the timing chain is the only option.

I've eventually got the parts and tools together to attempt the job and took the rocker cover off today.

The first thing I noticed was a lot of oil in the spark plug housing of cylinder 2 & 3, but did notice the 2 middle screws on the rocker cover between the spark plugs wheren't tightened down and in fact they were quite loose.

My bigger concern is the amount of built up gunk or whatever it is on and around the inlet cam. I don't want to go any further If this is a sign of a more serious issue.

I've attached some pictures, If someone could take a quick look and let me know I'd be grateful.

Thanks

vanos issues n12

$

Hi Everyone,

Ive got a 2007 mini cooper 1.6 with an N12 engine. I bought it as the bottom end needed doing, turned out its not a bottom end issue. The knocking was in fact a worn ancillary belt.

Anyway, another issue was the timing. The car was out of time when i bought it by maybe 3 or 4 teeth on the cam sprocket and wouldn't idle.

I got the tool and reset the timing but every time it's as if the vanos units were forcing the engine to loose time.

So i basically overhauled the entire engine timing. I've replaced the following for new parts

timing chain
Vanos solenoids
Tensioner
all fasteners for the plastic chain case,
top guide rail.
Inlet vanos cam sprocket.

basically the car keeps throwing codes 287D, 2870. also pre cat 02 if that makes any difference. Failed MOT emissions badly. Its as if the car keeps loosing its timing due to the vanos units altering. I haven't driven the car since the sprocket was installed as its not road legal at the moment.

has anyone got any ideas please as its a really nice car, if could just get it to run right!!

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum & Mini's. My R56 didn't come with a manual, so have had to figure alot out with either physically studying the car or through places like U tube & wiki. What I'd like to know is, what sort of coolant is best suited for a 08 model, as can't seam to find a straight answer. If anyone can help me out, I'd be grateful 🙂
