the above is a scan with autocom after timing chain replacement after top guide cracked off fell down to bottom sprocket and seized crankshaft solid,, after car was started and eml codes delete the can ran perfectly for a hour then it kept getting 287d vanos tight jammed code and stall on idle,,
the other codes were induced by moving the inlet cam to check the vanos was working correctly or was jammed or tight,, after working the cam back and forwards i restarted car and seems to have cleared it idles perfectly,, so make me wonder about the new inlet vanos sprocket being faulty in the future or just a bit tight on start up,,,either way it proves one point, that is if adaptation is out the autocom with detect it as above for vvt and vanos,
we phones bmw and asked for a price for one vanos inlet sprocket it told us £330 just for one,, just bought the FAI kit for £225 complete and normally they seem ok,, we also have found a number of broken breather pipes to cause issues after working on chain replacements do to be in way of chain tension-er and they crack and you cant see, so easy to blame the timing chain job as why it wont run right and idle etc,, buy some rubber pipe ID 21mm and two jubilee clips will fix the problem but in a inlet manifold off job worth doing,,
added point only try and rotate the camshaft when all fore pistons are in the middle of travel otherwise could bend things
