Conventional oil artwork techniques often begin with the specialist illustrating the topic onto the fabric with grilling or thinned colour. Oil colour is usually blended with linseed oil, specialist quality nutrient mood or other chemicals to create a slimmer, quicker or more slowly dehydrating colour. Because these chemicals slim the oil in the colour, they can also be used to clean styling licks. A basic concept of oil colour application is 'fat over lean'. This means that each extra part of colour should contain more oil than the part below to allow proper dehydrating. If each extra part contains less oil, the final artwork will break and stem.
