Who makes the cooper d engine??

Hi..
This is my first go on one of these forums so here it goes...

I have just bought my first Mini Cooper d and I love it. I never thought of getting a mini but I was out looking for a small, loads mpg and cheap tax a came across the mini, I took in for a test drive and I was sold... But I have been told that it's not a BMW engine!! Well what is it then? :puzzled: Could anyone help me please??
