Help!!! Newbie owner

Hey everyone! I'm new to this and need some answers fast! I'm sure I can find some answers reading through some forums but I just wanted to ask and see if anyone can reply with some helpful tips.

I own a 2006 Mini Cooper with a CVT transmission. I bought it used at 47,000 miles (currently has 53,000).

Ever since purchasing my MINI in April 2013 I have been driving it in D. Several months ago I noticed that when I reach 50-60 MPH on the freeway my MINI strains, feels really rough and then once I'm up to 70 MPH my MINI drives perfectly fine, smooth and great! BUT, when I release my foot of the gas pedal (going 70mph) my car does a "jolt" like movement and instead of slowing me down it accelerates me THEN slows down.

Took it to a mechanic today and he does believe there is something wrong with the transmission memory(?). Mechanic did some research and believes it has to be reset. He also let me know that I should be using my car in SD and steptronic mode, something I wasn't aware of that I should be doing. (I mainly drive expressway and city street so I thought D would be the best option).

Ok so my question being, the mechanic told me to use my MINI on steptronic mode for now and that maybe that would help my transmission and save me a trip from getting it "reset", has anyone see this before? Should I just take it to my MINI dealership and have them reset it? Or should I try driving my MINI is steptronic or SD for a bit?
