Bluetooth pairing - 2005 R53 MCS

Hi,
I've just bought myself a 2005 R53 Cooper S. When I bought it I was told it had the bluetooth prep. I have the mfsw with all necessary controls, plus in the armrest there is a snap in adaptor (albeit for a different model phone to what I have) and also in all the paperwork, I have a manual that explains how to pair a device and also an official piece of card that has a pass key written on it.

Because of this I can only assume that the car does in fact have the bluetooth prep, my issue is, I just can't seem to get my iphone 3gs to pair.

According to the instruction booklet, I need to hold down the button within the armrest for three seconds, then turn on the ignition, then after three seconds release the button. 'Bluetooth pairing' should then appear on the radio display. I've tried this but it just doesn't seem to work. I follow the instructions, but 'bluetooth pairing' does not appear on the radio screen. The radio is oem, not an aftermarket one.

Has anyone had this issue or know of a way I can test that the bluetooth actually works on the car?

I've read that you don't actually need a snap in adaptor to use the bluetooth function, all the snap in adaptor does is allow the phone to use the car aerial and charge the phone, is this correct?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks
