Mini one gearbox problem

2001 mini one 1.6 petrol manual

My car has been suffering from a gearbox whine. Today it has lost all drive at wheels. There was no bang or crunch or any noise it just lost all drive.

I have checked the gear lever cable at gearbox end and that's fine.

Have also checked clutch mechanism and that's ok also.

Have jacked car up and with car in gear turning one wheel turns the other.

When back on the ground And in gear you can push car easily

I am thinking box is goosed but would have expected more drama if that were the case

Any thoughts?
