Engine Malfunction - Cooper D

Hello

Wondering if anyone can offer any advice in regard to the yellow engine malfunction light coming on!

A friend drove the car, was in second gear, subsequently slowed down too much before putting it into first and stalled the car. Immediately after the engine malfunction light came on. Can stalling the car in this manner be enough to cause such a malfunction?

The car is currently under warranty, is it likely any repairs will be covered by this or am I looking at shelling out to fix whatever the fault may be?

Any insight and your experiences in regard to this issue would be greatly appreciated!
