Can you open a Getrag gearbox and change its bearings?

Hi everyone,

I wish to rebuild my gearbox as it sounds like a tractor and was wondering if its possible to be opened and rebuild with new bearings...

My mechanic is saying its not possible but I believe it can be done.

Can anyone shed some light please? Its a 2004 Getrag box.
